Given an astronomical rise in the divorce rate during the late 1960s, the concept of “marriage counseling” rapidly entered the vernacular. While most marriage counselors basically practiced talk therapy, “sex therapists” on the other hand proposed to cure their patient’s inadequacies through hands-on sexual contact. Always looked upon a bit skeptically by mainstream America culture (weren’t these ‘therapists’ really just prostitutes?), sex therapy acquired a reputation as something of a questionable fad.
